Crissy Makela, math teacher and girls' soccer coach, at Mankato Area Public Schools' West High School, was named one of 50 national winners of the Positive Coaching Alliance
National Double Goal Coach Award. Among Makela’s goals is that her players love the sport when they complete high school even more than they did when they started. A hope is that they will use what they learned as an athlete to help them in the future.
"I am grateful to be a mentor," Makela says. "Some of them are searching for a way through challenges put in front of them. I want them to turn around and reciprocate that for someone else later in whatever careers they choose."
Makela was recognized for exhibiting the following qualities:
- models and teachers players to honor the game
- helps players pursue mastery of their sport, not just scoreboard wins
- teaches players the importance of effort, learning and bouncing back from mistakes
- fills players emotional tanks
More than 2,000 coaches nationwide were nominated. Coaches who earn the award are those who strive to win while pursuing the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports.
